3. Using a brush or paint pad, apply thin, even coats taking care to prevent the finish from forming puddles. Overlap strokes and always maintain a wet edge. Finish will dry in two hours under normal conditions. High humidity or low temperature may lengthen dry time.
4. Sand lightly after first coat with very fine sandpaper (220 grit or finer).
5. Vacuum dust and wipe with a water-dampened cloth and Vermont Natural Coatings Wood Cleaner. Never use steel wool or a tack cloth.
6. Apply second coat.

Vermont PolyWhey Floor Finish Clean Up & Storage
• Brushes and other equipment can be cleaned with warm, soapy water.
• Wipe excess finish from container lip prior to sealing. Reseal lid immediately after using and keep lid tightly closed and container in an upright position.
• Store in a dry, ventilated and cool place. Keep from freezing.

• Slight marring or shallow scratches can be easily be repaired. The damaged location and close surrounding area should be abraded with very fine grit abrasives (220 or finer).
• Area should then be vacuumed and cleaned before coating. Product should be feathered out to blend in with the surrounding floor. Deep gouges will require a full surface sand. This work may require a flooring professional.

Vermont PolyWhey Floor Finish Maintenance and Upkeep
• Floors can be walked on with socks or indoor soft-sole shoes two hours after final coat under normal conditions.
• If necessary, use an untreated dust mop or clean cloth to remove any dirt or debris on the surface.
• Do not use harsh cleaners or wet mop until fully cured.
• Avoid placing area rugs down until fully cured. Furniture may be set down in place, but should have floor glides at all contact points.
• Remove spills promptly. Clean daily spills with a damp sponge and a dry towel.
• Sweep, dust mop or vacuum regularly - daily for commercial or high-traffic residential floors.
• Clean with Vermont Natural Coatings Wood Cleaner using a damp cloth or towel (DO NOT use wax-based or mineral oil-based products). Do not use excessive amounts of water. Surface can also be maintained with a damp sponge and then toweled dry to keep excessive moisture off the surface. For stubborn areas or stains, allow Wood Cleaner to stand for up to five minutes.
• Avoid over-washing floors.
• Avoid leaving any object with a wet bottom layer (shoes, plants) on the wood surface.
• Do not drag heavy furniture or appliances across the floor.
• Avoid letting water pool and remain on the floor.
• Heavy dogs with long nails hardwood and softwood floors may expand and contract with temperature and humidity changes. Over time the wood may show gaps, cracking or shrinkage.
• Softwoods, such as pine, often have higher moisture content, will likely show cracks sooner, and will indent or gouge easily. For advocates, this is part of the appeal of softwood.
• Hardwoods will indent and groove if exposed to heavy or sharply pointed objects.
• Protective pads on all furniture contact points are recommended.
• Use area rugs in high traffic sections and floor mats at exterior doors to collect dirt and grit.

Product Questions

  • Is Floor Furniture more durable than Furniture Finish?

PolyWhey Floor Finish and Furniture Finish have similar durability when 3 coats of finish are applied. However, the Furniture Finish will not stand up to marks caused by foot traffic in the same way if used on floors.

  • Can I use Floor Finish on furniture?

PolyWhey Floor Finish can be a good option (though more robust than necessary) for bars, tabletops and other large horizontal surfaces. If your project involves vertical surfaces (like bookcases or chair legs), Vermont Natural Coatings recommends using the Furniture Finish for better vertical adhesion.
