SBC Cedar Pre-Finished Solid Color Sidewall Select Kiln-Dried White Cedar R&R Shingle Finish Options:
In 2001, SBC Cedar partnered with PPG, a creator and global leader of machine applied coatings, for pre-finishing shingles. Working with PPG and drawing upon four generations of shingle-making experience, we co-developed our proprietary dehumidification drying system, which optimizes wood stability and coating adhesion. The partnership also yielded a very unique dipping process called MACHINECOAT that applies more coating on the exposed surface. Hence, SBC is proud to offer the industry’s best warranty* program.

The PPG Machinecoat process applies a 100% acrylic stain that offers a superior quality finish in a factory application under optimal conditions. SBC's Pre-Finished White Cedar R&R Shingles arrive precisely squared and graded on both sides for fast installation without compromising quality. With SBC and PPG, your investment is fully protected for years to come. SBC Cedar protects the two-coat Pre-Finished Solid Color White Cedar Shingles with a 25 year warranty on the finish and a 30 year warranty on wood decay. SBC also offers a one-coat dipped pre-finish, which they protect with a 10 year warranty on the finish and a 30 year warranty on wood decay.

SBC Cedar Sidewall Select AB Grade:
Sidewall Select AB grade allows no imperfections on the exposed surface. By blending Extra A and Clear B grades, Sidewall Select shingles area wider for a faster installation and better appearance. SBC cedar shingles are graded on both faces. SBC grade standards exceed CSA 0118.2-F08 (C2018).

Coverage Rates Chart

Estimating Cedar Shingles:
1. Measure the amount of square footage you have to cover.
2. Find the amount of coverage per box at your desired exposure using the chart above.
3. Divide the square footage of coverage needed by the square footage per box value from the chart.
Example: You wish to cover 200 square feet of sidewall using a 5" exposure. The chart shows that 5" exposure should yield 25 square feet of coverage per box. Divide 200 sf by 25, which results in 8 boxes needed.

Backing:
We recommend installing Mortairvent ventilation mat under SBC White Cedar Shingles in order to help maximize the life of your shingles.

More Information

Fastener Selection:
• Ensure the fasteners will penetrate the stiff sheathing by at least 1/2".
• The fasteners must be rust-resistant (hot-dip galvanized, aluminum, or stainless steel). Stainless steel offers the highest degree of corrosion resistance.
• For stainless steel fasteners, use Type 316 in locations within fifteen (15) miles of salt water. Type 304 stainless steel fasteners may be used in locations outside the salt water zone.
• Nails: Use ring shank nails with a blunt tip. The head should be a minimum of 7/32".
• Staples: the crown must be at least 7/16" wide.

Installation:
• Leave a gap of at least 1/8" between each shingle. Leave a larger space when the outside humidity level is high and/or when 2 wide shingles are installed side by side.
• SBC recommends leaving an air gap between your shingle siding and the under sheathing. This will help reduce moisture considerably, thus ensuring shingle durability. This gap can be made using either wood laths or a ventilation membrane.
• SBC shingles are graded on both sides, so either face may be used.
• The first row requires 2 layers of shingles. The first layer should cover the top of the foundation by at least 1". Apply the second layer 1/2" lower than the first. Make sure the joints between the two layers are not aligned. Shingles must not be in direct contact with the ground.
• Offset joints of successive courses by at least 1-1/2".

Fastener Application:
• Use 2 fasteners per shingle at about 3/4" on each side and 1" above the base of the preceding course.
• For shingles of over 8" wide, use 2 additional fasteners driven 1" apart near shingle center.
• When using air tools, adjust the pressure to ensure fasteners are flush with the shingle.

Finishing:
• PPG Machinecoat Process with 100% Acrylic Stain
