More Information

Surface Preparation:
• Identify existing finish and if it scratches off easily, pressure washing with a cleaning solution may be all that is needed. For prior organic oil-bassed (i.e. Linseed oil) acrylic, or propylene glycol finishes, stripping, sanding or media blasting may be recommended for preparation. Make sure to remove any flaking, peeling, sheen, or water beading (mill glaze) so product can penetrate well.

Recommended Tools:
• Use a high-quality china bristle brush for application. If needed use a pole brush for an extended reach. Use a 6" or 9" plush roller for application and back rolling after spraying.

Application Instructions:
• Apply generously by hand, giving the wood complete saturation. Back brush or back roll for an even penetration.
• Start with vertical and diagonal surfaces first, then move to flat and horizontal surfaces. Use a thick pole brush, a 6-inch plush roller for spindles, and a 9-inch roller for larger surfaces.
• Use plastic sheathing to protect areas from drips. For enclosed areas, apply less product and wipe off any excess.
• Wipe up excess stain on horizontal surfaces within 24 hours. Furniture can be placed back after 48 hours.

Drying:
• Deck*1 Coat provides ample working time. Dripping is minimal unless over applied. If running does occur just bankroll again. Use plastic sheeting to protect surfaces.
• Place a mat to wipe feet for a few weeks after application. Securely hammer down the contianer lid after use.

Finish: The finish is initally dark and lightens within a few days. Full cure takes up to 30 days. Rain typically won't affect the finish after a few hours. Heavy rain spotting can be addressed by back-rolling with a 50/50 mix of mineral spirits and stain sealer after drying. Minor spots usually disappear during curing.

Cleaning:
• Clean tools with mineral spirits. Wash hands with soap and water.

Storage:
Store Deck*1 Coat in a cool dry place. It can last for several years if properly stored. Stir well before each use.

Caulking Tips:
• Choose a color that closley matches the anticipated wood ton after staining. Make sure to apply caulk before staining for best results. If done after staining make sure the stain has dried completley. Most caulks are acylic and can bleed through semi-transparent stains. Avoid caulking small checks.

Product Questions

Product Questions

  • How long will it take to for the deeper tone to lighten up?

Deck*1 always has a deep color tone when first applied to any wood surface. The manufacturer states that initial deep color tone will lighten over time.  The full curing of a Deck*1 coat takes approximately 30 days.  However, environmental factors like the amount of sun, temperatures, and porosity of the wood will determine how much the color will lighten. Please be patient and let the product take its course.

  • How does Deck*1 apply to different wood types and surfaces?

On all wood projects the age and porosity of the wood make a difference.  Be mindful of these factors when choosing a color and ordering product to ensure your project is a success.

-Porous wood will soak up more Deck*1 and possibly require more product than normal to complete.

-Older wood may initially result in deeper color tones when using the Sundance Deck*1 product.

  • What if it rains after treatment?

Once the sealant is applied to dry clean wood it will immediately penetrate and repel water. The only time rain might present a problem is during application or if it occurs heavily within a few hours of applying the sealant.  Note: Rain typically won't affect the finish after 4-5 hours.  In extreme cases where there is heavy rain spotting it can be addressed by back-rolling well with an extremely light application of a 50/50 mix of mineral spirits and stain sealer after fully drying.  However, minor spots usually disappear during the curing process and we always recommend waiting to start a project if there is rain in the forecast.

  • How long will it take for the Sundance DECK*1 Wood Stain Sealer to dry and fully cure out?

The DECK*1 sealant typically requires 24-48 hours to dry, depending on the weather. Furniture can typically be placed back on the deck after 48 hours.  The full curing process will take approximately 30 days during this time the color will typically lighten.
