Woodsman Multi-Purpose Smooth Caulk may be used for multiple applications in and around all types of homes. When used on the outside of a home this smooth surfaced sealant provides a flexible weather and water barrier that will not dry out and crack like most general purpose caulks.

Woodsman adheres to most common building surfaces such as wood, metal, concrete, brick, masonry, porcelain, ceramic tile, marble and glass. Ideal for sealing construction joints like window and door frames, woodwork, eaves, soffits, vents and expansion joints, Woodsman can also be used as an internal sealant between courses of logs. Inside, Woodsman can be used for caulking/sealing around tubs, sinks, showers, etc.

Woodsman is a high performance, elastic sealant for general use around your house. It can be used during construction between logs, in butt-joints, around windows, doors, woodwork, eaves, soffits, vents and expansion joints.

Woodsman cures to form a highly stretchable seal that is UV resistant, water tight and air tight. It adheres to all materials including wood, metal, glass, concrete, masonry, tile, marble and glass.

Woodsman is easy to apply using standard caulk application equipment. Its extended shelf life makes those jobs that take longer than expected more manageable. Since Woodsman cleans up with just soap and water, job site labor costs are decreased.

When Should Perma Chink Woodsman™ Caulking Be Applied?
• Weather: Protect freshly applied sealants from rain until a water resistant skin has formed on new sealant application (usually about 24 hours). Avoid applying in direct sunlight to help prevent heat-induced blisters.
• Wood surface temperatures should be between 40 and 90 degrees F. Tarps can be used to protect sealant applications from weather.
Best: It is generally best to apply Woodsman after walls have been cleaned and before stain is applied.
Our sealants adhere aggressively to bare wood surfaces or to wood finished with Lifeline™.
• For the least visible sealant lines, choose a sealant color that’s a shade lighter than the stain you plan to use because it’s easier to cover a lighter color sealant with a darker color stain than it is to hide a dark colored sealant with a light colored stain.

• If you want visible sealant lines, you may apply Woodsman caulk after you stain. If you do this, it is best to apply Lifeline Advance™ topcoat after the Woodsman. This results in a more even appearance, helps them blend in with the rest of the wall and makes sealants easier to clean.
Worst: Application to surfaces with freshly applied oil-based stain should be avoided.

Perma Chink Woodsman™ Caulk Preparation:
• Before starting, inspect the installation of all backing materials. Where individual pieces of backing join to one another, make sure there are no gaps, ledges or discontinuities that show through after the sealant has cured. Smooth, trim or bridge gaps with tape as necessary.
• To insure proper adhesion, make sure that wood surfaces where the sealant adheres are clean and free of oils, waxes or other contaminates.

Perma Chink Woodsman™ Caulk Application Instructions:
• Cut the applicator tip to the desired diameter of the sealant bead you want to apply. Begin by holding the applicator tip firmly against the seam and apply a bead of sealant. Apply enough sealant to maintain a wet thickness of at least 5/16” and no more than ½” across the entire seam after tooling.
• Apply as much sealant as you can tool smooth in about 15 minutes to avoid a dried skin before final finishing.
• After the joint is filled, trowel out to approximately 3/8th of an inch thick across the entire joint, making sure there is good contact between the sealant and the wood. Do not spray it with water at this time!
• Be careful to maintain proper thickness especially in corners.
• Tip: Occasionally check the thickness of the sealant using a toothpick to see if you are maintaining the proper thickness.
• Once the sealant is roughly in place with air worked out of it, spray it with a light mist of water and tool smooth with a trowel or spatula. Do not saturate the surface with water. If it begins to run you have applied too much.
• Tip: If you used masking tape at the edges of the Woodsman, remove it now and smooth out edges with your tool.

Perma Chink Woodsman™ Caulk Clean-Up:
• If you get any sealant on the surface of the wood, be sure to wipe it off with a wet rag immediately. Dried sealant is very difficult to remove. Clean your tools and equipment with clean water occasionally during application.

Perma Chink Woodsman™ Caulk Drying and Curing:
• Drying time and curing time are two entirely different terms. In warm or hot weather, Energy Seal and Woodsman may begin to skin over in as little as ten minutes while a complete cure may take a couple of weeks. Cooler temperature and high humidity slows the drying time and curing process.

Product Questions

  • I am in the planning stages of my log home. I will be using square logs and am asking what caulk would you recommend to use seal between my logs. How much do you apply? Do you apply one bead down the center or would you apply one bead on each side of the log? Thank you

Woodsman is a great choice for log stacking. What is needed in stacking is a caulk that will stretch with the logs when they move, but that will also return to its original bead when the logs move back and release pressure. The idea is very similar to the properties of a rubber band, and an acrylic latex based caulk like Woodsman fits this need nicely.

One other consideration with a stacking caulk is the fact that it won't be seen by anyone once the logs are stacked. Color and texture aren't nearly as important here, you just need a product that will keep the seal over a long period of time. Perma-Chink markets Woodsman as a stacking caulk, so they have a smaller variety of colors and they don't add the texturing agent in order to offer it at a lower price point than Energy Seal caulk.

If you are using a milled log with tongue and groove joinery, you can use either one or two beads of stacking caulk depending on how the log was designed. Most milled logs are designed to have either one or two bearing surfaces and at least one relief groove. We recommend using one bead of stacking caulk for each bearing surface. We typically recommend a closed cell foam gasket in the relief grooves.

  • Can this be used both outside and inside?

Yes, you can definitely use the Perma Chink Woodsman caulk for exterior and interior use on your log home. It's stretch and durability is outstanding and will make an excellent choice for filling cracks and checks.

  • Can you tell me how long it takes for the Woodsman caulk to cure?

Perma Chink Woodsman caulk should begin to skin over in around ten minutes, but it may take up to a couple of weeks to fully cure. Be sure to apply Woodsman caulk in temperatures between 40 and 90 degrees for proper curing.

  • I'm in the early stages of planning my log home construction. Which caulk would you recommend to seal between my logs? Is the Perma Chink Woodsman the best one to use?

Perma Chink Woodsman caulk is an ideal stacking caulk with great strength and stretching properties. Woodsman caulk can also be used to seal around your doors, windows and vents to create a weather-tight seal.

  • Can I use Perma Chink Woodsman caulk to caulk around my aluminum clad windows?

Yes. Woodsman adheres to most common building surfaces such as wood, metal, concrete, brick, masonry, porcelain, ceramic tile, marble and glass. It is ideal for sealing construction joints like window and door frames, woodwork, eaves, soffits, vents and expansion joints.
